Porcelain Paver Patio & Outdoor Living Space | Upper Arlington, Ohio
What began as a blank backyard was transformed into an approximately 800-square-foot outdoor living space designed for entertaining, dining and relaxing.
Traditions Landscape Group designed and installed the patio using GeoCeramica porcelain pavers, creating a clean, contemporary surface that complements the architecture of the home. The layout was intentionally divided into several functional areas, including an outdoor dining space, fire pit lounge, television area and grilling station.
Custom hardscape features were constructed with Unilock Pisa 2XL Smooth block and limestone coping, including the TV wall, gas fire pit, steps and grill island. The outdoor kitchen area was finished with a steel gray leathered granite countertop, adding texture and a refined contrast to the lighter patio surface.
Fresh landscaping was incorporated throughout the design to soften the hardscape, add seasonal color and create a finished transition between the patio and surrounding yard.
The homeowners completed the space with beautiful upscale outdoor furnishings, showing how thoughtful patio design and furniture placement can turn even a completely open backyard into a comfortable extension of the home.

Questions We Answered Through the Design
How do you design an outdoor living space from a blank backyard?
We start by determining how the homeowners want to use the space and then establish individual zones for activities such as dining, grilling, gathering around a fire and watching television. This Upper Arlington patio uses one cohesive hardscape design to connect several distinct outdoor living areas.
Are porcelain pavers a good choice for an outdoor patio in Ohio?
Porcelain paving systems such as GeoCeramica offer a contemporary appearance and are designed for exterior applications. Proper product selection, base preparation, drainage and installation are especially important in Central Ohio’s freeze-thaw climate.
How large should a patio be for multiple outdoor living areas?
There isn’t one ideal size. Furniture dimensions, circulation space and the number of desired activity zones should drive the design. At approximately 800 square feet, this patio provides room for dining, lounging, a fire feature, television viewing and grilling without making the individual areas feel disconnected.
Can a grill island, fire pit and TV wall be designed to match?
Yes. Using the same masonry materials across several features is one way to make a larger outdoor living project feel cohesive. Here, Unilock Pisa 2XL Smooth block and limestone coping visually connect the fire pit, TV wall, steps and grill island.
